Celebrating the skill of designers and makers of Chipping Campden
The story begins in 1902 when C.R Ashbee, the radical Arts and Crafts designer moved his London East End workshops to Chipping Campden. It was part of his romanticism to think that craft would be at home in the country, he wanted to give his craftsmen a healthier life.
But his dream did not last long and the Guild disbanded in 1908. The permanent exhibition at the Museum starts with this story but then turns it round, showing how designers and makers have since flourished in the Cotswolds.
Objects on display include engravings of Campden by the architect FL Griggs who did his most important work here. There are books bound by Katharine Adams for the London printer Emery Walker, who wanted to see her recognised as the finest artist binder in England and silverwork by the influential industrial designer, Robert Welch who established a workshop and studio in 1955.
